Making the decision to build a Sunshine Coast granny flat can be a very exciting step. Whether it is for yourself, to accommodate a younger family or elderly parents, this specific type of build has to be one of our most requested. It certainly seems like we’ve done a 360 in modern society – given all of the rising bills and everyday living costs, it really does make sense to share or split your bills. Gone are the days of your kids moving out and purchasing a property, or your parents living in retirement home set ups. While we all understand that there are rules and regulations which govern the overall permissible size of your proposed granny flat, we want you to know that there are a few simple ways to increase your total living space. All you need to do is think “outside” of the box.

How Can I Increase The Size Of the Granny Flat?
You may have already read about the rules pertaining to the overall size of your granny flat. In short, in the Sunshine Coast Council if located within a rural or rural residential zoned area, you may build up to 90m² and for all other zonings up to 60m² (with the exception of the Moffat Beach/Shelly Beach/Dicky Beach areas up to 45m²).
As stated in the Sunshine Coast planning regulations, these sizes pertain to indoor areas – not outdoor. Hence, if you feel that you need slightly more living space, you should consider building an outdoor deck or patio area.
Is there a size limit to the deck or patio area?
You may be pleasantly surprised to know that there is absolutely no limit to how large or small the outdoor deck or patio on your Sunshine Coast granny flat can be. So perhaps if you consider yourself to be an entertainer or outdoor enthusiast you can make the best of both indoor and outdoor areas.
You could even consider a unique approach whereby different “zones” (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc) are linked via a breezeway. Take a look at the below example, the perfect way to incorporate indoor and outdoor living.
If you are lucky enough to be located on acreage here in the Sunshine Coast, this option certainly will enable you to make the most of where you live! Imagine waking up in the morning, making a cup of coffee and then making your way out onto the deck to wake up with the rising sun. Life doesn’t get any better than that, does it!?
